Pudsey & District Rambling Club was formed in 1928. In those days many members lived in that area and used to meet at the local working men’s club. No one had cars and public transport was used to reach the start of walks, which were often more than 20 miles in length. The day usually ended with refreshments at the Rose & Crown in Ilkley, or other similar hostelry, after which a dash for the last bus. In those days we were known amongst other walking groups as the Pudsey Gallopers, with a hard drinking reputation. Older and wiser, nowadays we are more like Pudsey Strollers, and afterwards adjourn to the nearest tea room for tea and cake! Our current membership mostly lives in north Leeds, Horsforth, Guiseley, Ilkley and Skipton. Some members have been in the Club for up to 50 years, but we have many who have joined in the last five years. We generally walk in the Yorkshire Dales. Our weekly walks on Thursdays are 4-7 miles in length and usually at an easy to moderate level, although we do organise more strenuous walks from time to time. You will need your own transport to get to the start of most walks. We regret that we cannot allow dogs on walks. We are a very friendly club and new people are always made to feel welcome. Although we have over 50 members, we rarely have more than 15 people on any given walk. Most of us are in the 60’s to 80’s age group. We organise some holidays and also social events so that all members can keep in touch. We can best be described as a group of friends who walk together as much as a walking Club. New members should quickly feel they are amongst friends. If you are interested, please get in touch with Andy Mitchell (see below and click on the email link) and maybe come out with us before deciding if you would like to join us.
